The Botswana ICT Discussion Forum was held in Gaborone, Botswana from the 5th to the 6th October, 2006. This event was co-hosted by SANGONeT and the Botswana Council of NGOs (BOCONGO). The forum sought to provide a platform for discussing Maitlamo, the Botswana ICT Policy. The idea was to give participants an opportunity to reflect on what the policy means to them, and its impact on their work. On the other hand, the event aimed at exposing participants to practical ICT tools which participants could incorporate in their work. Other issues discussed were: opportunities provided by Open Source solutions, Access to Knowledge, as well as ICT opportunities and challenges facing civil society organisations in Botswana. A very topical issue in Botswana, ‘Community Radio Stations’ was hotly debated on Day 2, where panellists coming from Parliament, National Broadcasting Board and MISA-Botswana led discussions Speakers at this event included Mr Sesinyi, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, who gave a keynote address on behalf of Honorable P.V. Moitoi, Minister of Communication, Science and Technology. A. Koloi, President, BITS; Beza Belayneh, Director, Centre of Information Security; Bigani Setume, Deputy Director, Somarelang Tikoloho; Modise Maphisa, National Director, MISA-Botswana; Trywell Kalusopa, Lecturer, University of Botswana; Mzwakhe Makhalemele, Technical Support Coordinator, SANGONeT;.
A total of 101 participants attended the forum. These were drawn from civil society organisations, government, corporate sector, and academic institutions.
