The session on 'Women, ICT and the Media' provided gender-based NGOs, activists and other stakeholders with the opportunity to share ideas on ICT initiatives that are already in place with their organisation to tackle challenges faced by women.
Speaking during the session, Chief Executive Officer of Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network Kubi Rama, said that, “ICTs allow us to communicate with our colleagues in the region instead of traveling to their locations”.
GEMSA, which is currently looking at the opportunities and benefits offered by the ICTs, will be officially launching the Gender and Media Diversity Centre (GMDC) at the Highway African News Agency (HANA) conference in September 2007.
According to Rama, GMDC will be a physical and virtual resource centre based at the GEMSA offices in Johannesburg, with linkages in Africa and across the globe.
Women'sNet on the other hand is also utilising ICTs to help increase the voices of women. The organisation’s Media and Information Manager Janine Moolman, contends that, “Women do not have the opportunity to speak for themselves”. She emphasised the importance of digital stories in addressing various challenges faced by marginalised women. Moolman explained that there is a need for people to develop skills that will enable them to tell their own stories with the use of ICT.
Meanwhile in an attempt to use ICTs to enable human rights organisations to monitor how gender is represented in print and broadcast media, Sandra Roberts, the Project Coordinator of the Media Monitoring Project (MMP), revealed that her organisation has developed a media monitoring tool "Monitoring Made Easy (MME)". "By using the MME software, you will be able to produce almost instant results based on best-practice media monitoring methodologies developed by the MMP", explains Roberts.
In her closing remarks, Rama argued that, "We must also take into consideration the race issue when we deal with gender.” She further warned that black men and women are also equally not represented on this issue. |
